Scholarship scam red flags

  • You're asked to pay a fee to apply, "hold" an award or receive it.
  • The award is "guaranteed," or "you can't get this information anywhere else."
  • Someone asks for a bank account, credit card or Social Security number to "reserve" a scholarship.
  • You're told you're a "finalist" for a contest you never entered.

List every scholarship you plan to apply for. Rows sort by deadline so the next one is always on top.

No scholarships yet. Add your first one. Start with your school counselor's list and each college's own scholarships page.

Use figures from the same academic year for every college. Grants and scholarships reduce net price. Loans must be repaid, and work-study is earned through employment rather than applied upfront to the bill.

Estimates only. Confirm every figure with each college's financial aid office, and ask them how aid could change in later years.
